Wandjina Husband and Two Wives
Australian Ochres on 14 oz canvas.
By Mildred Mungulu.

About the Wandjina:

The Wandjina is a sacred icon to 3 groups of Kimbelry Indigenous people. The tradition is a living culture which has been extimated to be over 15,000 years old, making it the world's oldest unbroken art tradition. The Wandjina has enjoyed a resurgence since it was used representationally by Donny Woolagoodja at the opening ceremony for the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

About Mildred:

Mildred is a Worora woman born in 1957. She is one of the senior and sort after painters from the Mowanjum group.

About the Painting:

This painting is a recent work from Mildred and expertly completed in genuine Australian ochre. The images is 750 x 980mm with generous extra canvas for stretching. The Ochre has been finely ground but still maintains a gritty appearance on the canvas. Mildred has used a professional artist quality binder for the medium rather than the more commonly used PVA glue. This is a rare example of very fine and collectible Wandjina art in ochre.
