Contemplation A Retrospective Exhibition of Work by Mark Norval

Contemplation A Retrospective Exhibition of Work by Mark Norval

The work of multi-award winning Kimberley Artist Mark Norval is the subject of a retrospective exhibition being held at the Broome Convention Centre in Chinatown. The exhibition spans Mark's career from a self portrait he executed in high school in 1976 to drawings he recently did while staying the Perth Clinic recovering from depression.

Mark attributes his depression to having worked as teacher in the Kimberley for over 30 years and being closely involved with many youth who have taken their own lives.  The high rates of suicide stand in stark contrast to the subject of Mark's work pre 2010 which is a celebration of Aboriginal people, their culture and country.

The title piece of this collection "Contemplation" is a study of young Aboriginal people contemplating initiation ceremony. In this work Mark invites the viewer to contemplate their own perceptions of Aboriginal people and their place in our community.

The retrospective will be at the Broome Convention Centre in Chinatown until Sunday 8 September 2013. Open daily between 10am and 4pm or by appointment 0418 905 244.
